Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary

Overview

Located to the east of Tangalle, it has been declared a wildlife sanctuary and is one the oldest and most important bird sanctuaries in Sri Lanka. The Kalametiya bird sanctuary consists of mangroves and coastal lagoons rich in biodiversity. This bird sanctuary is a marsh that is home to endemic birds and wintering birds. The coastal lagoons and mangroves provide a habitat for both marine and birdlife and there are more than 150 species of birds, 41 species of fish and 38 species of reptiles in this sanctuary. Bird and wildlife enthusiasts have the ability to spot wintering birds such as Grey Herons, Brahminy Kite and Purple Swamphens and also threatened birds such as Indian Reef Heron, Glossy Ibis and the Black-capped Purple Kingfisher. Weaver birds are the most common species of birds found within this sanctuary and their nests can be seen scattered all over. There is a bird watching tour where you get to go on a boat ride. The best time for such a tour is either at 6 in the morning or 3.30 in the evening. Not only do you get to go on a boat ride to explore birdlife, you also get the opportunity to enjoy a walk in the jungle since there are small scrub jungles nearby.
