Mandaram Nuwara

Mandaram Nuwara is a tiny village which sits at the foot of the tallest mountain in Sri Lanka, Pidurutalagala, located within the Central Province of the island. It is also commonly referred to as the “Misty City” as a result of being shadowed by adjacent mountain ranges and is almost completely covered in mist most of the day. A short and easy hike away will find you at Kolapathana Ella, a waterfall that is popular amongst visitors to the little village.

Overview

With the morning mist and seamless presence of nature, Mandaram Nuwara nestles amidst a quaint land in which the concept of time is almost of no concern. Legends weave through the crossroads that lie at the feet of Piduruthalagala. Popular belief is that the village was known as ‘Mandaram Pura’ which was used as a hideout during the era of the Kandyan Kingdom.

Blessed with an abundance of nature, the rich soil is extremely fertilie. Systematically planted green patches of leeks, carrots and beans will be within your peripheral view as you explore the village by foot. The call of birds will resonate from the mist covered mountains above.

The terrain of Mandaram Nuwara is scattered with many streams that rush down a path strewn with rocks of different shapes and sizes. The irresistible temptation to jump into the clear natural water pools and blend in with the tranquillity of nature is indisputable.

Kolapathana Ella – Kolapathana Ella is a multi-step cascade that begins from a stream originating from the Pidurutalagala forest area. The height of the fall is less than 50m.

Homestay – Stay in a small house owned by a resident of the locality, nestled away within the misty mountains of Mandaram Nuwara. Enjoy home cooked meals and be taken care of as if you are still at home, only with a better view.

Camping – Mandaram Nuwara is a popular area for camping as the views from the hills are indescribable. The local resident who facilitates the homestay option also has access to a camping site which is accessible via a short hike and will arrange each meal for the campers. An onsite toilet also adds to the convenience of the location.

Natural Pools – Many natural pools exist along the path that the waterfall runs through, providing an endless supply of potential bathing spots. A word of caution, the temperature of the water might make it feel like it is beyond freezing but absolutely refreshing.

Elamulla Falls – This waterfall is hidden from the main road but can be seen about 90 meters above the road leading to Mandaram Nuwara. The height of the waterfall is approximately 16 meters and flows over a rock with a slope of roughly 45 degrees. A short distance from Mandaram Nuwara town and is a must visit.
