Weragantota

Another one of the famous sites in the Ramayana legend, Weragantota is the first location King Ravana brought Sita in his ‘Vimana’ – his flying chariot. Thus, the reason Weragantota translates to ‘place of aircraft landing’. According to the legend it was a spectacular area with flowing waterfalls and streams.

Overview

Another site associated with the Ramayana Legend, Weragantota was the capital of King Ravana – the most powerful emperor in his time. ‘Weragantota’ translates into ‘place of aircraft landing’ because this is where King Ravana first brought Sitadevi when she was abducted by him. There used to be a magnificent palace that Queen Mandodari lived in, and was surrounded by streams, waterfalls and different types of flora and fauna.
