Weerawila Tissa Sanctuary

Overview

The Weerawila sanctuary is located in Weerawila, Tissamaharama and is said to be one of the most picturesque locations in Sri Lanka and the perfect spot for bird watching.
The specialty of this location is the extensive lakes that attract more than 400 species of birds to the area. It has many reservoirs such as Askongaha Lake, Mutiamma Lake, Tissa Lake and Dabaraweva.
More than 400 species of birds visit this area out of which 200 species of birds are migratory birds that fly from the south and north as far as the Arctic Tundra. The entire population also includes 33 endemic birds.
Water buffaloes and monkeys can also be spotted at the Weerawila Sanctuary although the birds are a highlight.
The sanctuary is formed because of the causeway that runs across the Wirawila lake which makes it a perfect nesting ground for the diversified bird life.
Located close to the Bundala National Park, the Weerawila Tissa Sanctuary is the perfect playground for bird watching enthusiasts from around the world.
