Overview

This beach is protected by reefs and sand-bars making it one of the safest places to swim in Sri Lanka. However, since there aren’t any lifeguards around it is best to take necessary precautions.  If you wish to watch the flashy marine species (reef fish) near these reefs and rocks, you should snorkel out towards the western end and the Pehambiya end. The months from October to April are best for snorkelers. In this beach it is a common sight to see small canoes (oru in Sinhala) kept sheltered by local fishermen, especially at the Pehambiya end. Complete your beach holiday by exploring the largest seated Buddha statue of 50 metres at Wewurukannala Viharaya and encounter an experience seeing the only blowhole of Sri Lanka at Hummanaya which is close to Dickwella and of course discover the beach rope swing which became insta-famous on Instagram.
