Overview

Out of all the places to visit in Beruwala, the fishing harbour should definitely be on your list. One would think that it’s not the most typical place you would find tourists at, and yet you do because it is a different experience altogether. It is a traditional fish market with all the sights and sounds you would come across in any other fish market elsewhere – fish mongers yelling out their prices and bargaining with their potential buyers, various types of fish everywhere, but with a more amplified feel to it; however the atmosphere is peculiar in a way.
The fishing harbour and market comes alive bright and early in the morning, from six in the morning till seven which is when the fishermen have unloaded all of their first catches. With multicoloured boats docked nearby, the sun just making its way up into the sky – it’s a great way to start your day. People of all sorts make their way here to get their fresh fish, providing the fish mongers with their income for the day. You get to see firsthand what they have to go through every morning, the same routine over and over again – how everything happens behind the scenes, which is certainly interesting and a learning experience.
