Pigeon Island

Renowned as a snorkeller’s paradise in Sri Lanka, Pigeon Island is one of the two maritime national parks in the country. Overview

The Pigeon Island Maritime National Park is one of the two maritime national parks in Sri Lanka and is the most popular spot for snorkelling in the country. Named after the Blue Rock Pigeon that breed there, it consists of two islands which is a few minutes ride by boat from Nilaveli Beach. Snorkelling in Pigeon Island explores the coral reefs and soft corals and a variety of species of tropical fish including Blacktip Reef Shark and several species of endangered marine turtle, including Hawksbill, Green and Olive Ridley. On the other side of the main island, there are rock formations which have deeper waters and hundreds of fish underneath which make diving a more thrilling experience.
