Overview

The Batticaloa Lighthouse also known as the Muttuwaran Lighthouse is located 5 kilometers away (just a 15-20 minute ride) from the city of Batticaloa, near the Palameenmadu estuary. It is exactly placed where the lagoon meets the Indian Ocean along the Bar Road, which is a stretch of sand found along the lagoon. It was built in the year 1913 by the British who ruled Sri Lanka at that time, and is 28 meters tall. When you reach the top of the lighthouse you are greeted with a stellar view of the lagoon and the surrounding. As a result of the Civil War that took place in the country for over 25 years, this lighthouse was neglected and not properly cared for. Although the Boxing Day Tsunami affected the surroundings pretty badly, the lighthouse suffered only minute damage.
