St. Mary´s Church

The rose coloured Roman Catholic Cathedral of St. Mary’s Church, is one of the largest churches in Sri Lanka. Built in neoclassicism style with sculptures of numerous saints, this cathedral is a testament to the incorporation of European techniques to Sri Lankan art and architecture.

Located on Grand Street in the heart of Negombo, this rose coloured Roman Catholic Cathedrals is one of the largest churches in Sri Lanka.
Built in neoclassicism style, the ceiling is adorned with alabaster images of numerous saints and the walls at the upper levels are fitted with sculptures of religious saints. The unique depictions of Christ on the ceiling were painted by a local Buddhist painter, N.S. Godamanne. Constructed between 1874 and 1922, the architecture and art of St. Mary´s Church cathedral is a testament to the incorporation of European techniques to Sri Lankan art and architecture, which came about as a result of the colonial era.
