Things to do in Kitulgala Forest Reserve

Nestled amongst extensive forest is a town that is bursting with adventurous water sports activities for everyone to take part in. It is a superb place for those looking for an action packed time, filled with fun memories.
Located 95 km away from Colombo, the main city that’s constantly bustling with people busy in action – it is a radical change as Kitulgala is the exact opposite with the way the river soothingly flows without any interruption. Everything is very laid back and still compared to the other destinations in the near vicinity.
The town that is well known for its water sports that includes the very famous white water rafting on the Kelani River – it is quite the destination for both locals and tourists alike. Kitulgala is the ideal place for the nature enthusiasts out there – as there is plenty of forest area for them to explore in the form of hiking, trekking and mountain biking. There is no short of outdoor activities for everyone to take part in.
The forest reserve is home to some fascinating species of birds, flora and fauna and other endemic animal species. The hills are populated with parakeets, mountain hawk eagles and crested treeswifts. The Kelani River was the prominent location where the famous Oscar winning film ‘The Bridge on the River Kwai’ directed by David Lean in the 1950’s.
